Natural Eczema Remedy

Eczema (also known as dermatitis) is a dry skin condition which comes in many different forms. It is not contagious so you cannot catch it from someone else. In mild cases of eczema the skin is dry, scaly, red and itchy. In more severe cases there may be weeping, crusting and bleeding. Constant scratching causes the skin to split and bleed and also leaves it open to infection.

Eczema affects people of all ages but is primarily seen in children. Those who “grow out” of their eczema during early childhood may see it recur again in later life.

In the UK one in five children and one in twelve adults have eczema while eczema and contact dermatitis account for 84-90% of occupational skin disease. In contrast to psoriasis, eczema is often likely to be found on the flexor aspect of joints.

Types of Eczema

There are several types of eczema, the two most common forms are atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis.

Atopic eczema: This is a genetic condition based on the interaction between a number of genes and environmental factors. In most cases there will be a family history of either eczema or one of the other ‘atopic’ conditions ie asthma or hay fever. It affects people with dry and rough skin (keratosis pilaris) and may be caused by a variety of allergens. It often starts in early childhood.

Possible causes include:

  • Food allergy , which plays an important role in children under one year but not in adults
  • Cow's milk, hen's eggs and peanuts are the foods most likely to exacerbate infantile eczema
  • House dust mites tend to aggravate eczema in older children and adults
  • Pet dander exposure, such as to cats, dogs and other furry animals, may play a role
  • Certain bacteria may cause sudden, severe outbreaks of eczema

Contact dermatitis: This condition affects mainly adults. It occurs on skin contact with a chemical substance and takes 24 hours to develop.

Pharmacologic Treatments

Nowadays powerful development of pharmacology and industrial production of medicines encourages growth of treatment by medication. Simplicity of application, availability and rapid effect give priority to pharmacotherapy. However, along with their therapeutic effect, medicines can cause pathologic conditions that are associated with side effects.

Many allergic conditions and autoimmune processes are caused by medicines. Furthermore, treatment by medication does not restore our own body's defense mechanisms.  This point of view makes physicians turn back to the experience of natural healing factors and carry out investigations in order to find medication-free treatment methods.
